Our Activities and Community Service

Service to our community, veterans, and our country is the foundation of Corn Island Chapter, NSDAR. In addition to their DAR state and national committee work, our Daughters volunteer their time, talents, and resources to a variety of local and state organizations and projects. Corn Island Chapter, NSDAR Daughters are recognized for their heartfelt commitment to volunteerism and service.

Working with the Friends of Eastern Cemetery to help maintain this local cemetery that dates back to the 1700s. Corn Island Chapter, NSDAR Daughters volunteer multiple times each year to clean headstones, mow and trim this massive, abandoned cemetery.

Supporting the Hindman Settlement School in Hindman, Kentucky, one of the NSDAR’s ongoing education projects.

Working with the Veterans Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) throughout the year to provide needed supplies and support throughout the year for veterans being released from the Robley Rex VA Medical Center and those identified as needing specific assistance. Corn Island also collects new “soft” clothing, socks, coats, and other requested items throughout the year.

- Providing Christmas gifts for the members of two or more veterans’ families each year

- Signing and delivering hundreds of holiday greeting cards to the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center

- Serving in the Color Guard and staffing numerous Veterans Day events each year.

- Serving in the Color Guard and greeting Honor Flights when they return from their trips to visit the War Memorials in Washington, D.C.

Sponsoring the Wreaths Across America program that places thousands of wreaths in our local Zachary Taylor National Cemetery and across the country in December each year.

Serving as docents, office, and support volunteers for Farmington Historic Plantation. Corn Island Chapter, NSDAR Daughters also donate funds for specific requests, and have published two cookbooks that benefit Farmington.
Recognizing those who work to restore and/or preserve historic buildings and materials.
Volunteering at Oxmoor Farm for a myriad of services - from serving as event staff to polishing silver to helping in the gardens. The house and 400-acre farm - now held in a trust - were owned by the same family since the 1700s.
