Membership

Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible to join the DAR. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death, as well as of the Revolutionary War service of her Patriot ancestor. Admission to membership in the National Society is through a chapter or as a member-at-large.

You may have heard family stories on ancestors who fought in Revolutionary War, know of an actual lineal ancestor – or even have had a family member in DAR. Chances are, you’ll find a fascinating history and ancestors you could only imagine. The search may take you to the archives of county clerks’ offices, state records repositories, and the genealogical sections of libraries. Begin your search for your Patriot at the DAR Genealogical Research Database (GRS). A complete list of accepted Revolutionary War service is available at our DAR website.

Helpful Resources from NSDAR

To assist in your research, the NSDAR Ancestor database (GRS) lists ancestors on whom members of the National Society have joined. This listing is continually updated as new membership applications and supplemental applications are approved.

If you discover a common lineage in the NSDAR Ancestor database (GRS), you may want to see the complete DAR application detailing this lineage, called a Record Copy. Electronic Record Copies may be purchased directly from the GRS. Learn more about researching and purchasing Record Copies.

By completing the application process you will discover what countless other DAR members have discovered: the thrill of finding out how their ancestor helped to achieve American Independence and a deeper appreciation of how what they did impacts our way of life today.
